LOCATION

O ur winery is located in Herreros de Jamuz, in the southern part of the province of Leon (Castile and Leon, Spain). The vineyards are spread over the valley of the river Jamuz, which has its source in the hills around El Teleno mountain, just a few miles from Herreros. This position gives us unique climatic and soil characteristics.

We have a mild continental climate, with a broad range in temperatures between day and night, that is characterised by long, cold winters with severe frosts and very hot, dry summers. The protection from El Teleno makes our vineyard one of the brightest and sunniest spots in Spain with little rain.

Many of our vineyards are a hundred years old and can be found on small plots located at 800 metres above sea level on both sides of the river Jamuz. They grow in brown soil with very low fertility. This soil is mostly acidic and lacking in organic material, with a sandy loam texture, lots of stone and siliceous material.

ABOUT US

Fuentes del Silencio was born out of our enthusiasm for making exceptional wines from old vines with grape varieties indigenous to the province of Leon. Both the vineyard recovery and vine-growing techniques, as well as the production methods for our wines, aim to achieve wines that are unique and exceptional. Our team's painstaking work and the search for the expression of our small plots turn each of our wines – some of which are only produced in very limited numbers – into a unique experience.

OUR VINES

The true stars of Fuentes del Silencio are our 17 hectares of vineyards, which mostly contain the indigenous varieties of Prieto Picudo and Mencía.

We have carried out restoration work to restore the wine-growing heritage of Jamuz by recovering pre-phylloxera and hundred-year-old vineyards. We look after them with the greatest care and affection, since they are a treasure we need to preserve. Working the soil, careful pruning in winter and removing lateral shoots in summer to improve the aeration within our vines, planted using the traditional trellises typical of the area. This way, we are able to reduce treatments to a minimum, strengthening the health of our plants and respecting the biodiversity and balance of the flora and fauna. We have added a small area of new planting to these hundred-year-old plots, using less vigorous rootstock and wood selected from our old vines.

Our vineyard is divided into small plots, each differing from the other, which is why we are committed to wine-making by plots in order to obtain unique, original wines that will reflect the character of the vineyard and teach us about our vineyard. We limit production to a quantity that will not exceed 2-3 kg per plant and 3,000-4,000 kilos per hectare, so as to obtain the best expression from our grapes.

The grapes are harvested by hand, selecting them from each plot according to the degree of ripeness and collecting them in boxes of up to 15 kilos to better preserve them. An arduous task, since some of our vineyards are very much prone to a creeping growth habit.

WINES

Each of our wines is exceptional and unique. Most of the time, these are incomparable wines, produced in very limited quantities from very small plots. In each of our wines, we seek to reflect the specific terroir, the grape variety and the characteristics of each plot from which the wine has been made.

The Aromas del Silencio wines are made using grapes from the Jamuz valley that come from different plots with similar characteristics, allowing the wine-making process to take place using the grapes jointly or creating an optimal blend. We take great pains and care to obtain high quality wines.

The Fuentes del Silencio wines form the most exclusive range of our wines, where the harvest, wine-making process and wine production takes place separately for each plot. These wines are unique and incomparable, and are often made in very limited quantities.
